Catchy Design Wins Award

Keen design work by Tollbar Business and Enterprise College student Louise Higham has seen her win a competition to design a logo for the recently-founded Longitude Harrison Foundation.

The foundation, which marks the work of Barrow upon Humber clockmaker John Harrison, saw Louise beat off more than 500 pupils and students, aged six to 16, from schools across North and North East Lincolnshire to win the competition.

It was through his clock making that John Harrison in the 18th century developed his skills to enable him to make an accurate chronometer enabling seafarers to accurately fix longitude and safely sail around the world.

Louise received a certificate signed by the XIVth Astronomer Royal, Sir Arnold Wolfendale, a Fellow of the Royal Society, who has given his support to the Foundation.

Presentation of the award in the Tollbar BEC Conference Centre included a visit from the High Sherriff of Lincolnshire John Lockwood and Andrew King who is a world authority on John Harrison, both dressed in appropriate clothing.

Louise's design, which will be reproduced in black and white, was chosen for its simple, clear and maritime approach to the logo.

"I am absolutely thrilled," said Louise, who is currently pioneering the International Baccalaureate at Tollbar Sixth Form College.

"I studied John Harrison in depth before I designed the logo and tried to incorporate time and the sea, but keeping it pretty simple so that you could see the story," she explained.
